What Counts as a Hybrid at Black Tie

Most cannabis sold today is a hybrid of some kind, the result of decades of crossbreeding. Many cultivars in Black Tie's Indica and Sativa collections are hybrids too, listed as indica-dominant or sativa-dominant. This collection is for the cultivars in between, labeled Hybrid and listed as balanced or 50/50 hybrids. A balanced hybrid whose listing leans one way, such as Balanced Hybrid (leaning Indica), is placed in that phenotype's collection instead.

The Phenotype field on each product page shows the classification, such as Balanced Hybrid (50/50).

How to Choose Hybrid THCA Flower

When comparing hybrid strains, consider more than the hybrid designation. Review each cultivar's aroma and flavor profile, cultivation tier, available quantities, and batch-specific Certificate of Analysis. These details provide a clearer picture of the flower you're purchasing and help you select a strain that matches your preferences.

Phenotype and Tier

Phenotype and tier are independent, so a hybrid can come from any of Black Tie's flower tiers: Exotic, Indoor, Light Dep / Light Assist, or Greenhouse. The tier appears in each product name and reflects the cultivation and quality standards that batch was produced under.

Multi-Strain Products

Because THCA MINIS, THCA Trim/Shake, and THCA pre-rolls are offered in several strains, they appear in this collection as well as in Indica and Sativa, and the strain you pick sets the phenotype. The flower samplers appear here too, since they generally aim to include an indica, a sativa, and a hybrid when inventory allows. Each product page lists the sizes offered for that strain, and select strains are available in larger quantities through Bulk THCA Flower.

Preferred Time of Use

Why Time of Use Varies Among Hybrids

Indica and sativa listings tend to cluster around a time of day, while hybrid listings spread out. Depending on the cultivar, a hybrid listing may name morning or all-day use, daytime or anytime, or afternoon or evening.

The Preferred Time of Use field is the quickest way to see how a specific hybrid is listed. Like the phenotype ratio, it describes how the cultivar is characterized rather than anything the COA measures, and individual experiences vary.

02 Daytime or anytime

What the Research Found

What Lab Results Show That a Label Doesn't

A 2022 PLOS ONE study of nearly 90,000 cannabis samples from six U.S. states found that products fell into three broad terpene groups: one high in caryophyllene and limonene, one high in myrcene and pinene, and one high in terpinolene and myrcene. The authors found that indica, sativa, and hybrid labels were poorly or inconsistently aligned with those groups.

The Batch COA

For a hybrid, the batch COA is the clearer guide. Every report lists cannabinoid results, and reports with a terpene panel show which compounds lead a given batch, which says more about a hybrid's profile than its label. All reports are also collected on the Lab Results page.

Three Phenotype Collections

Hybrid vs. Indica and Sativa THCA Flower

Hybrid sits between Black Tie's other two phenotype collections. Indica THCA Flower covers indica and indica-leaning cultivars, typically listed for later in the day, and Sativa THCA Flower covers pure sativa and sativa-dominant cultivars, typically listed for morning or daytime. Each collection reflects how its cultivars are listed, not a ranking, and no phenotype is inherently better than another. Every cultivar also appears in the main THCA Flower collection.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What are THCA Flowers?

All (THC dominant) Cannabis is naturally high in THCA. THCA is the acidic precursor to THC Delta-9 and naturally forms prior to Delta-9 during the lifecycle of the cannabis plant. THCA also converts to THC Delta-9 through Decarboxylation, or heat.

Do THCA Flowers get you high?

Yes, through the process of decarboxylation, THCA can convert into THC Delta-9, which is psychoactive. Therefore, after undergoing decarboxylation, THCA flowers will produce euphoric effects when combusted (smoked).

What is the difference between Exotic, Indoor, Light Dep, and Greenhouse THCA Flower?

Black Tie carries four distinct production tiers. Exotic is our flagship living-soil flower, featuring extended curing periods and Full Panel testing as the lineup standard. Indoor is cultivated in coco coir under strictly controlled environmental conditions for maximum batch-to-batch consistency. Light Dep (Light Assist) is greenhouse-grown using a precision blend of natural sunlight and controlled light cycles, while Greenhouse flower utilizes natural Pacific Northwest sunlight in hoop-house structures. Each tier offers a unique price point, flavor profile, and verified lab documentation.

What makes Black Tie different from traditional dispensaries and online THCA brands?

Four concrete standards set us apart:

First, we source exclusively from rigorously vetted partner farms in Oregon and California using OMRI-certified organic inputs.

Second, our Exotic tier utilizes living-soil cultivation and slow-curing processes that commercial operations typically skip.

Third, we back our catalog with a 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee—a policy virtually unheard of in the traditional dispensary space.

Finally, every product is backed by a third-party COA linked upfront, with Full Panel testing as the standard for our Exotic lineup. We are also the only hemp company to have placed at a High Times Cannabis Cup competing directly against traditional marijuana brands.

Are Black Tie CBD Products Legal?

Yes. Black Tie CBD products are fully legal under federal law in accordance with the 2018 Farm Bill. Our hemp undergoes compliant pre-harvest post-decarboxylation testing to ensure the psychoactive Delta-9 THC concentration does not exceed the legal 0.3% threshold on a dry weight basis. Furthermore, the DEA confirms that hemp-derived products meeting this standard are not controlled substances, allowing for lawful interstate commerce.

What is a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and how do I read one?

Certificate of Analysis (COA) is an official document issued by an independent, ISO-accredited laboratory confirming a product's cannabinoid potency, Farm Bill compliance, and safety screening results. Every Black Tie product has its specific COA linked directly on the product page before purchase. For our Exotic tier, reports include a full safety panel screening for pesticides, heavy metals, microbial impurities, and a complete terpene breakdown.

What's your shipping policy?

We ship via USPS and UPS, with options from USPS Ground Advantage (2-5 business days) up to UPS Next Day Air Saver, and rates are calculated at checkout. We currently do not ship to California, Idaho, or Texas. Orders process within 6-72 business hours on a first-come, first-served basis, and you'll get tracking by email as soon as yours ships. Orders of $100 or more ship free via USPS Priority Mail (BT VIP), and only Priority Mail Express is delivery-guaranteed. Shipping insurance is optional but highly recommended, and orders of $200 or more ship with signature confirmation.

Every order ships discreetly in unbranded packaging with no invoices inside — just a Thank You card and QR codes linking to our compliance paperwork and each product's Certificate of Analysis. All Black Tie CBD products are federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill and contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC, so they ship lawfully.

For full details on shipping see our FAQ page.

If I need to return my order, can I do that?

Yes! We stand behind our quality with a 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee. If you aren't completely happy with your purchase, you can return eligible items within 30 days for a full refund of the product price.

Items must be unopened or minimally used. Original shipping charges and shipping insurance are non-refundable.

For full details on returns, see our FAQ page.

Do you offer wholesale?

Yes. Black Tie CBD proudly partners with retailers, dispensaries, and distributors through our wholesale program.

Simply complete our Wholesale Registration Form and provide the following documents:

  • A valid business license and/or seller’s permit
  • IRS Form SS-4 (FEIN letter)
  • Business name, location, and contact information
  • A short description of your business (e.g., retail, spa, dispensary, distributor)

What is Decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is the chemical reaction that turns THCA into Delta-9 THC. Raw THCA isn't psychoactive on its own, but applying heat — through smoking, vaping, or baking — removes a carboxyl group and converts it into THC, the compound responsible for the "high."

Because THCA weighs more than the THC it becomes, the conversion isn't 1:1. The standard factor is 0.877, so a flower testing at 30% THCA yields roughly 26% THC once decarbed.
